What's at risk?
Holding tens of thousands of patient records, it is likely that the UK NHS holds more personal information than any other public sector body. Invariably this is in the form of computerized records, case notes and emails. While it is vital for speed, efficiency and patient care, that the NHS and associated bodies share and collaborate around this information, it also poses the risk of data breach and data loss.
In fact, over 200 NHS organisations have admitted to losing sensitive personal information in the past two years, according to the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO). These data breaches account for nearly 30% of all data breaches reported to the ICO since the beginning of 2008.
"The sacred principle of patient-doctor confidentiality is being compromised."
Richard Thomas, Information Commissioner UK
The challenge:
Following the government drive to deliver a higher quality care environment, there is increased pressure on NHS Trusts and clinical teams to provide faster response, increasing the speed of diagnosis and the efficacy of treatment. With increasingly heavy case-loads and distributed organizations, clinical leads can often be hampered in this efficiency by their ability to gain secure, real-time remote access and the ability to easily and rapidly share information with other clinicians or third parties.
Typical issues:
- Security restrictions on remote access and sharing from other clinics, wards, or from home can hamper responsiveness for both clinicians and consultants
- Sharing patient records between clinicians or other parties can take time, and generally involves a courier or other method of transport
- Arranging clinical meetings to discuss patient care takes time and effort and significantly interrupts normal working practice
